LOCAL ENGAGEMENT

Local Engagement exists to serve the city of Azusa and greater Los Angeles area by loving our neighbor and sharing the redemptive hope of Christ. Students serve locally over the Fall and Spring semesters.

Service opportunities vary in length, location, intensity, and the type of service (e.g. tutoring, food ministry, community development, outreach). Depending on the length of service, students can earn 5, 15, or 30 service credits.

Local Engagement maintains a variety of partnerships with organizations throughout Azusa, Los Angeles, and the San Gabriel Valley (from the Zu to LA). We offer on-going weekly opportunities, three-day experience trips to LA, and one-time opportunities (mainly on weeknights and weekends).

Our office strives to create mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships with local community organizations through foundations of intentional and appreciative community development practices, as established by the Christian Community Development Association.

Transportation:

If you sign up for a Local Service opportunity through OSD, our Local team can help coordinate rides.

Service Credits:

Service with OSD: If you serve through OSD Local Engagement, our team will process and post your service credits to your APU student account. You do not need to submit a service credit report.

If you serve outside of OSD like with a local church, community organization, or any other un-paid volunteer work, you will be responsible for your own transportation and recording your service hours through your student portal at home.apu.edu (Service Credit Request Form). Please do not list Local Engagement as your supervisor on this form, as this will result in an automatic denial of service credits. Please instead list the org rep who witnessed your service at the event as your supervisor. Please note that you will also be required to write a short reflection essay with the submission of this form. (This essay is waved when you sign up with OSD via Managed Missions.) If you have questions about your service credits, or would like to check on the status of an application, please email servicerequirement@apu.edu. Thank you.

If you have an approved medical exemption from the Accessibility and Disability Resources Office, please contact Karen Rouggly at krouggly@apu.edu to discuss your options for participation.
